Dr. Stamatios Lerakis completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the Medical School of Athens, Greece, in 1998. He pursued further training and specialization through a series of fellowships and residencies. His early research in Nuclear Cardiology was conducted at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, in 1991. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia, in 1994, followed by a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Miriam Hospital, Brown University, in 1995. His Cardiology Fellowship was undertaken at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1998, and he further specialized in Echocardiography at Emory University in 1999.

Experience :

Dr. Lerakis has had an extensive academic and clinical career. He is currently a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and holds the role of Director of Noninvasive Cardiology at Mount Sinai Heart. He is also the Director of Imaging for Structural and Valve Interventions at Mount Sinai Health System. Previously, he was a Professor of Medicine, Radiology, and Imaging Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine, where he also directed multiple cardiovascular imaging programs, including Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac MRI, and advanced imaging fellowships. His prior roles include Adjunct Professor at Georgia Tech and Emory, and Assistant Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in imaging for structural heart interventions and has been a principal investigator in multiple clinical trials.

Research Focus :

Dr. Lerakis’ research primarily focuses on the advancement of multimodality imaging techniques for cardiovascular interventions. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding and improvement of imaging in transcatheter aortic and mitral valve interventions. He has been instrumental in developing imaging protocols to predict, detect, and manage complications in structural heart procedures. Additionally, he has played a crucial role in advancing guidelines for the evaluation of valvular regurgitation and transcatheter heart valve procedures. His research contributions include nearly 300 publications, covering topics such as echocardiographic imaging in interventional cardiology, cardiac MRI applications, and risk stratification methodologies.

Awards:

Dr. Lerakis has received several prestigious awards in recognition of his contributions to cardiology and medical imaging. Notable honors include the Distinguished Physician Award from Emory University in 2017 and the Gerald Pohost Journal Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Best Manuscript Award in 2010. He has also been honored multiple times for excellence in teaching, receiving awards from Emory University’s Cardiology Fellowship Program between 2001 and 2003.
